How Many People Can Share a Desk?

Last year, I sat on a panel led by Knoll with many designers and architects, and we discussed the ratio of people to a desk. Currently in most major companies, the ratio is 2-3 to a desk.  In a sales organization the ratio can be as high as 20 employees per desk! Lately, the movement has trended toward an open work environment with several conference rooms and meeting spaces. Last year, we visited Quicken Loans in Detroit, where we saw a completely open concept office with large kitchens, meeting rooms for team work sessions, and smaller rooms for private phone calls. As I look to the future, I see this set up as working well for my own firm. Different size meeting rooms and an open working area make for great working relationships, enabling the creative flow of ideas while stimulating efficiency.
