How to Re-purpose a Building

Just because a building started out as one thing doesn’t mean it has to stay that way.

That was my thought, in 2016, when I came across a former racquet ball court building in Troy, Michigan, while researching new space for my art gallery client, The Art of Custom Framing. That thought ultimately turned the courts into a dramatic fine-arts gallery, frame shop and custom printing facility.

Each court highlights the work of a different artist, a feature you sometimes see in large museums but is rare in a gallery. The hardwood racquetball court floors add a level of elegance to the individual spaces.

Just because a building started out as one thing doesn’t mean it has to stay that way—and just because you have a certain type of business doesn’t mean you have to have the same kind of space as everyone else in your industry.
